Dewi
and Ana are best friends. They are in the same class in school. Most of
the time their friends often find them playing, laughing and chatting
together.
It
has been several days, Ana seems quieter. If Dewi tell her some
stories, she just listens without any comment. Her smile and laughter
suddenly disappear.
“What’s wrong with you?” Dewi asks.
Ana
stares at her best friend for a moment and says, “My father had been
transferred to Surabaya by his office. So, we will move there by the end
 of this month.”
“What?” Dewi looks so shocked hearing the news. “I’m sorry to tell you this,” Ana replies. She holds her best friend’s hand.
Dewi takes a deep breath but a minute later her face shows a smile. “Hey, we still have around two weeks to be together, right? Let’s spend our time by doing things that could make us happy.” Ana smiles. What a good idea! Sadness will only make the situation worse.
The
next day, things are just fine between them. They play, talk, laugh and
chat together. They try to spend the time left by doing things that
could make them happy.
This
Saturday, Ana’s family is holding the farewell party. Tomorrow, they
will fly to Surabaya. Dewi feels so sad. Ana is a nice friend. She is so
kind and cheerful. Now, she is going to lose her best friend but she
believes that their friendship will last forever.
The
party runs well. All their classmates come. Before enjoying lunch, the
photographer takes their picture together. After that, Dewi stands among
the crowd and present a poem.
**********
I shot an arrow into the air
It felt to earth, I knew not where
For so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight
I breathed a song into the air
It felt to earth I knew not where
For who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long.. long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke
And the song, from the beginning to end
I found again in the heart of a friend
**********
All the audience gives their applause. Ana runs to her best friend and gives her a hug.
“Thank you. That is a really sweet poem,” she whispers.
All of Ana’s classmates come one by one. The boys shake her hand. The girls give her a warm hug.
“Don’t forget to send us letters,” Mutia says. “Tell us all your stories there.”
“I won’t forget,” Ana promises. Her eyes brimmed with tears.
“This is from all of us,” Dewi gives a box with a pink ribbon.
“Thank
you,” Ana says. “I’ll keep it. You know, guys, the times we used to
have together is one sweet part of my whole life journey.”
“Come visit us on your holiday. We’d be glad to see you again,” Dewi says.
Ana hugs Dewi again.
“We are still best friends, right?” She whispers.
“Of course. Best friends forever,” Dewi replies.
Friendship is a wonderful thing. Keep it and you’ll never be alone.
